Never mind. I definitely will NOT be calling you next Fall to urge you to vote for President Obama. He may very well be the lesser of two evils, but I just donated my shares in the evil-measuring business to the two Davids, Plouffe and Axelrod, who stand to gain far more from them than I ever will. (And they’re much better at phone-banking anyway, or so I’ve heard.)

This startles me a bit. Somehow, I imagined you might offer some highly conditional support premised on who the Republican candidate might be.
One of Glenn’s occasional but long time commenters, who typically offers a degree of support for the Democrats, generally, and Obama, specifically, despite misgivings indicated he’d not offer any material support for Obama’s candidacy in 2012. Still, likely, he’d vote for him. Glenn, without rancor, asked why the withdrawal of support, but still offer the vote. Jestaplero really couldn’t offer an answer for that, and acknowledged as much.
In a purple (more often red) state like Colorado, I flatter myself that my vote might actually matter. But, this last bit of performance art around social security and the “super congress” has pretty much convinced me that I am a small degree safer as a human being with the Democrats in the minority until they figure out how not to try to out-GOP, the GOP.
Do you still entertain the thought that you might vote for Obama, even though you – apparently – won’t offer his candidacy more than that?
There’s no doubt, I think, that the Loony and Vicious Right™, if they actually held more than the House, and particularly if they held the Presidency, would pick up the beat on our national Totentanz. At this point, though, I don’t think that having Obama in the White House for another four years will necessarily guarantee us a reprieve, even if Chomsky and Greenwald are wrong, and our President really is a servant of the light, and not simply a self-serving fandancer like all the rest of his associates.
I’d be pleased to be proven wrong, but I’m an old guy, without so much time left that spending it in a state of voluntary schizophrenia appeals to me. Will I vote for him? Probably. Will I support down-ticket Democrats? I probably would if I didn’t have to listen to how foursquare they stand in the ranks behind the President. I just hate — and it’s a visceral hatred at this point — having to act like what the Democratic Party apparatchiks say makes any sense, or that in the real world of politics people have to say stuff like that, but we’re really much, much more savvy. Trust us. To believe that after the last four years I’d need a lobotomy. I just can’t take that level of cognitive dissonance any more.
This cognitive dissonance of which you speak is painful for me; physically painful.
